What we do

Career Specialist and Strategy Advisors

The approach we take for our clients are tailored to meet their needs.  Our team work as a team and take a holistic view of the whole transition phase, believing strongly that making a change should include every aspect of working life and give each person the opportunity to reflect on the wider context if they wish.

We begin with an in-depth discovery phase where our clients are supported by a carefully matched career coach who will help them to look at the next phase of their life and career objectively and thoroughly. Preparation for marketing themselves will be supported by a series of specialist interviews and will encourage clients to present themselves well in every aspect from CV to interviewing and networking skills.

We encourage our clients to network with each other and our alumni and friends. We provide many opportunities by attending workshops, seminars and social events or joining others in our specialist professional groups. Our approach is team based and drafts in whatever expertise each person requires to achieve their carefully defined goals.

Career Development Strategy

At the moment of transition, classically there are four paths which clients wish to explore. These are:

Progression

Progressing into another full time executive role. Nearly 50% of our clients choose to continue in the field in which they are established. This can be with a listed company but increasingly involves entities backed by private equity interests.

Portfolio

Adopting the pluralist approach. This phrase has become axiomatic for the construction of several part-time, and generally non-executive roles. These vary from three or four Chairmanships to a combination of consulting and non-executive roles. These roles can cross the ever-diminishing public/private sector divide and include not-for-profit organisations. Approximately 25% of our clients followed this route. Such ‘portfolios’ increasingly include involvement in enterprises backed by private equity.

Platform

Constructing one’s own business platform. Where a client’s strategy is to develop an independent business, we have strategic partnerships with firms who advise and provide practical support in the early stages of business start-up – in accounting, tax, administration, IT support, marketing, and PR. At times, the percentage following this route and availing of our infrastructure can give our offices the flavour of a business incubation unit.

Potential Reinvention

Reinventing themselves. Increasingly, many successful executives are deciding not to continue doing what has made them so successful; they make a step-change into something completely different whilst still in what would formerly have been thought of as mid-career.

Exploring your options

At times when most executives set out, they thought that they knew where they were going. One's final strategy seldom emerges immediately and most clients wish to explore a combination of potential options. The journey involves absorbing the counsel of experts and market feedback on the way. Our value to you is in bringing the best advice at each stage.

We are experts in the issues relating to the management of transition itself, and to the methodologies of finding the next role(s).

To augment this, we have strong relationships and with the most respected:

  • Legal counsel

  • Executive and non-executive search firms in the public and private sectors

  • Private equity houses

  • Financial advisors

  • Consultants on reputation management

The provision of infrastructure is a key element. This means access to the full range of relevant sector and industry research databases, an office and full administrative support.

Practical support

There are three conceptual phases to the transition process. For us all they take different shapes, but the pattern is:

  • 'Decompression’, or taking stock and getting your thinking clear as to ‘what next’

  • Strategy or direction setting once clarity is emerging

  • The action phase of actively managing a campaign to achieve your objectives

To reflect these changing needs, we have a team approach consisting of:

  • A Career Consultant

  • A Research Manager and

  • A Campaign Manager

Throughout a client’s progress, the anchor Career Consultant is the primary point of contact. This is the person who leads the process of coaching to understand where one is now and in developing a strategy for the future.

The Research and Campaign Manager join when a strategy begins to emerge to identify potential target companies and intermediaries – bringing the skill base of professional research and executive search to actively manage a client’s individual search. While we are proactive, creative and can put clients at an advantage in terms of information and contacts, the search is ultimately owned and driven by our clients.

Tailoring your support

Not everyone needs the same level of support. At our first meeting, we discuss and advise on which elements are most important or possible in any client’s situation.

Programmes are tailored around the needs of the sponsoring company, and each individual client.

The elements are:

  • Guidance in working through the issues arising from the change in career and personal circumstances.

  • Thorough career review and assessment to identify professional and personal skills, abilities, strengths and weaknesses, including the use of psychometrics as an aid to the counselling process.

  • Assistance in determining personal and career goals, identifying and evaluating options, setting realistic career objectives and preparing a career plan after analysis of all the opportunities.

  • Help in composing a succinct CV highlighting skills, achievements and experience.

  • Advice on how to approach the various routes to the market and in self-marketing techniques covering both prospective employers and networking contacts.

  • Coaching in interviewing, communications and image presentation, including CCTV role-playing, letter writing, etc.

  • Development of self-marketing strategy and action plan.

  • Guidance on developing a network of contacts to uncover and pursue potential opportunities.

  • Assistance in approaching executive search firms, Interim Management providers, specialists in Non-Executive Director appointments, venture capitalists, merchant banks and professional advisers.

  • Advice on the assessment of offers and negotiation of remuneration packages.

  • Continuous consultation to assess progress, fine-tune the campaign, provide on-going support and sustain motivation.

  • Duration: The service is open-ended, without time limit and continues until you have achieved a successful transition. On-going consultation and follow-up can be provided while you settle into the new role (probably during the first three months).

  • Guarantee: We guarantee to renew the same level of support for a further six months at no additional cost, if, for reasons outside your control, the new position or venture fails within twelve months of commencement.
